Why and what?

If you've been to more than one con disco then chances are you've been to a dodgy one. Sometimes the DJs "learn" but not necessarily very well. So, keeping in with the spirit of Teledu, let's "hang the DJ" and do it ourselves.

A lot of you have already got mp3 players with gigabytes of music on and by the time of the con there's just going to be more of you with them and, chances are, you're going to be able to find tracks that you and your mates want to hear at the disco. So, play them.

How does it work?

You put your name down on a list, first come first served, if you want to play some music. When it's your turn you plug your mp3 player in (all set up with the tracks you want to play) and press "Go". As an initial thought I'd limit each person to a maximum of three tracks or ten minutes (no interminable prog please). At the end of your go you can put your name back on the bottom of the list if you want another turn later.

An advantage of this is that the people who are actually in the disco (not the bar) get to pick the music. If you feel it's becoming samey get your name on the list and make sure you're ready when it's your turn (or it's forfeit). It's possible that someone is playing stuff that no-one else wants to hear so there's always the possibility of "bottling" him off (er, throwing softer things than bottles hopefully) or implementing a "if no-one's on the dancefloor then fast forward to the next track" rule. Obviously these are only initial thoughts.

This way of running the disco shouldn't interfere with any "theme" that we later decide for it.

What do we need?

Equipment: disco stuff (amps, speakers, lights etc), presumably to be hired unless someone happens to have it. (Listed on Budget page)

People: The room will probably have to be cleared / setup. Plus people to set up equipment. It would probably also be a good idea to have someone with tech knowledge on hand during the disco to help out the "DJs", maybe doing a ten minute "this is how it works" explanation beforehand for anyone interested.

What To Bring: MP3 players, music.

Theme It might be fun to have a disco theme, I could suggest a Harry Potter theme, as it can be dark, and evil and cloakey or fun and schoolie.
