In the spirit of Teledu, I see no reason why anyone should not be allowed to give out a prize if they think someone else deserves it. People running competetive programme items may wish to give out a prize to a winner. Members may think someone particular has contributed greatly to the fun. Maybe you just want someone recognised for having the best beard at the convention. I have three proposals relating to prizes.
1) If someone is running something and wishes there to be an organised official prize, say for winning a quiz or something, they can get in touch with me and we'll sort something out together. The prize will be awarded at the closing ceremony.
2) If someone wants to organise a prize independently of the officers, in whatever way they choose (ballot, whim, trial by ordeal, whatever), they can surprise us at the closing ceremony and award the prize during whatever prize-giving ceremony occurs. A heads-up during the convention would be good, so we can plan enough time for all the prizes.
3) There will be a ballot-type box in the Fannish Living Room with some nomination slips. These will be for "I would like to thank..." nominations, where you can, say, thank someone for being the most fun at the disco, or for having the knobbliest knees. The best ones will have certificates awarded at the closing ceremony.
I also think it would be nice to give out trophies, and I suspect that many people have old ones lying around gathering dust and are just looking for an excuse to get rid of them. If anyone has any old trophies they were awarded years ago, say for being runner-up in the sack race at junior school. bring them along and donate them to the prize fund. This may mean that the winner of the Space Hopper Racing is given a trophy for Best Costume at the Village Carnival 1983, but that should just add to the general amusement.
